Hampstead Heath Affordable Art Fair Mural

For 4 days in October 2011, I taught workshops in relief printing for visitors at the Affordable Art Fair on Hampstead Heath. The print blocks were made by scratching into drypoint paper plates or foamprint and then printed on a specially made garden roller printing press.
A selection of the prints were collaged together to create a mural which was then given to the Royal Free Hospital in North London.

INSIDE A BUBBLE
In a transient and turbulent world, we try to create order out of the chaos by constructing our own individual realities. In this exhibition, three visual narratives explore the coping mechanisms and behavioural patterns of people sensitive to their current surroundings. Ideas about isolation, reconstruction and adaption within these constructed environments are expressed in the work.

The exhibition features the work of Áine Cassidy, Liz Mller and Howard Miller & Welmoet Wartena

The Great Lake project

The Great Lake is a collaborative project with my brother Howard Miller.
Here is a brief outline of the theme and concept:

The Great Lake
is a fictional location where a city has been built on the edge of a frozen lake. The inhabitants skate across the frozen water with barges to fish through holes in the ice. The patterns in the image are generated and dictated by following the rules of human nature, as they would act in this imagined scenario. The paths of movement across the ice lake are built up by the psychology of following previous tracks or consciously going in a different direction. In this way each mark is affected by the previous one to colonize the paper creating a cumulative, open ended pattern that is on the one hand familiar, human, collective and organic and on the other remote, lonely and cold.

Graphite, Indian ink, spray paint and eraser were used on both sides of a sheet of tracing paper, which was then photocopied onto a separate sheet of tracing paper and the process repeated over and over to achieve a deep and layered yet 2D effect that is like looking through a sheet of frozen ice, or at layers of sediment deposits. The drawings were then printed using a photo-polymer etching technique which further compacts and intensifies the existing layers by adding new material on top - like a fresh layer of snow.
